Mode of Interaction of Vestibular Canals on the Extraocular Oblique Muscle

Abstract
The present experiment was carried out to explore the mode of interaction between the vestibular canals on the extraocular motor system. In anesthetized rabbits, two different canal nerves were subjected to square wave .pulses, separately or simultaneously, and the isometric tension of an oblique muscle was recorded. The following results were obtained.
1. Tension increase of the superior oblique muscle produced by simultaneous stimulation of two excitatory canals were lesser than the sum of the tension changes caused by separate stimulation of the each canal nerve.
2. Tension decrease of the inferior oblique muscle caused by simultaneous stimulation of two inhibitory canals were lesser than the sum of the tension changes by separate stimulation of the each.
3. Separate stimulation of excitatory and inhibitory canal nerves evoked reciprocal changes in the tension of an oblique muscle. Tension caused by simultaneous stimulation of these canals were somewhat similar to the sum of the reciprocal effect of the each canal.
These experimental results suggest that simultaneous excitation of different vestibular-canals may result in summation of the each canal effect on an extraocualr muscle.
